A day after HT reported that illegal vendors were allegedly shelling out 5 lakh per month as bribe money to municipal corporation officials in prominent markets of the city, MC additional commissioner Sunil Bhatia ordered an inquiry into the issue and shuffled the postings of all 19 inspectors with the enforcement department of the civic body.
HT had run a sustained campaign against encroachments, detailing the specifics of the menace over the past four days.
The joint commissioner Bhatia had also called a meeting of the inspectors on Thursday and warned them to mend their ways.
Bhatia told HT: “An inquiry has been ordered into the issue. I will discuss the issue with MC commissioner Vivek Pratap Singh on Friday and name the inquiry panel head. It is a very serious issue and action will be taken.”
He added that special drives will be launched against encroachments and the violators would not be spared.
Last year, the vice-chairman of enforcement committee Davesh Moudgil and two other members, Major DS Sandhu (retd) and Malkiat Singh, had resigned from the committee, alleging that the officers in the committee were non-cooperative and had no intention to remove encroachments.

On Thursday, encroachment drives were launched in various markets. In Sector 22, 15 violators were issued challans; in sector 19, 15 challans were issued; in Sector 15, 10 challans were issued and in Sector 43 and 44, 20 challans were issued.
