The Jats have decided to suspend their ongoing protest till September 13 following assurances from Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

The protest, demanding reservation in government jobs under the OBC quota, had begun on February 18.

On Monday, Mahendar Singh Punia of the All-India Jat Aarakshan Sangarsh Samiti, said: “The chief minister has assured the grant of OBC status before September 13.”

The body of Sandeep Karawasra, who died in a clash between the police and protesters on March 6, was, meanwhile, cremated at Mayyar village.

The body — a rallying point for the protesters — had been lying on the railway tracks at Ramayana village of Hisar district.

Following the cremation, the Hisar-Delhi National Highway-10 was opened to traffic. The protesters have also cleared the railway track.
