Panjab University is contemplating to abolish the entrance test for admission to ME/MTech at University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET) and consider only GATE qualified candidates for the admission.
PU had introduced ME/MTech from session 2014-15 at UIET. The varsity had fixed admission criteria as BE/BTech or equivalent with at least 60% marks from PU or any other recognised university. GATE qualified candidates are exempted from entrance test. However, last year no candidate who qualified entrance test could get admission in any of the course as all the seats were filled by GATE applicants.
The matter will be tabled in the syndicate meeting scheduled to be held on March 8.
Child care leaves get green flags
The syndicate will also decide on granting child care leave to women employees, teaching as well as non-teaching staff of PU.
The vice-chancellor had set up a nine-member committee under the chairmanship of dean university instructions (DUI), AK Bhandari, for implementation of the scheme. The committee has framed the rules. The CCL will be granted only for the first two living children and the applicants are required to submit the application asking for it, at least one month in advance.
The varsity has also decided to give priority in granting the leave to employees having children below four years of age and those having children with chronic illness. The medical condition of the child must be duly certified by the chief medical officer at the PU health centre. Single women living with their children and with no family support will also be given priority.

{{/usCountry}}In the recent past, Panjab University Teachers' Association (PUTA) has been at loggerheads with the PU authorities over the implementation of the scheme.
Better hostel facilities for research scholars
Research scholars of Panjab University will soon be enjoying better and comfortable residential facilities on the campus.
There are around 300 each research scholars residing in boys and girls hostel. The facility would be provided to research scholars, who are getting house rent allowance from their respective funding agencies such as university grants commission (UGC). The research scholars would have to deposit HRA to the university.
The research scholars will have to pay Rs 5,000 per month as charges.
The university authorities will develop a block in each hostel for research scholars. The entire block would be renovated and each room would have new furniture and other comforts. Electrical fittings in rooms would be done as per requirements of scholars. A contractor would be hired to ensure cleanliness and hygiene of the premises.

Certificate courses in corporate security, safety and fire protection management.
Introduction of choice based credit system and adoption of the credit framework for skill development.
