Department of microbiology, Panjab University (PU) in collaboration with the Association of Microbiologists of India (Chandigarh unit) organised a one-day symposium on the use of microbes, microbial products and biotherapeutics for societal needs.
The workshop was sponsored by Department of Science and Technology (DST) under the DST-PURSE programme and was attended by 200 participants including students and faculty members from various departments of the university and neighboring institutes.
The symposium was divided into four sessions that included an inaugural session and three technical sessions. The workshop was inaugurated by the chief guest, PU advisor-research and former director, NABI, SAS Nagar, Prof Rakesh Tuli who made the participants aware about the recent breakthroughs in the field of microbiology.
Dr LK Bansal, dean- research, PU, highlighted the various steps being taken at the university to promote research in the area which was followed by a brief talk by PU dean- sciences, Dr Naresh Tuli.
The keynote address was delivered by Prof RK Saxena, department of microbiology, University of Delhi, wherein he emphasised upon the role of microbial enzymes in the leather industry for more eco-friendly processing of leather.
The inaugural session ended with a vote of thanks by co-organising secretary, Dr DK Rahi.
Executive director, centre of innovative and applied bioprocessing, SAS Nagar, Dr RS Sangwan talked about major microbial products obtained from waste materials and synthetic biology. Dr Priyanka from Institute of Nanoscience and Technology, SAS Nagar, explained the importance of biosensors and nano-bioprobes in various diagnostic procedures.
