The entire security staff of Panjab University was sensitised to the issue of gender-based violence in a ten-gender sensitisation workshop organised by the department-cum-centre for women's studies and Development, Panjab University over a course of ten days.
The workshops effectively sensitised more than 340 security personnel of Panjab University to issues of gender discrimination, causes and consequences of violence against women and the strategies to cope with the problem.
The workshops that commenced on January 28 comprised of interactive sessions as well as roleplay on themes of gender discrimination, prevalence, causes and consequences of violence against women.
The resource persons included Dr Manvinder Kaur, Dr Ameer Sultana, and Dr Rajesh Kumar Chander. The students and research scholars of the department presented roleplays depicting eve teasing and stalking of girl students at various spots on the campus and how the security people handled those problems.
The workshops witnessed intense discussions on gender-based violence, especially on Panjab University campus.
The security personnel, in the course of these discussions also highlighted that they were well aware of the problems occurring on the campus. They, however, revealed that often the students did not listen to them and many a times girls first complained and then withdrew their complaints. These were major handicaps in performing their duties. They highlighted the need for support from students and staff for better performance of their duties.
