During the resumed hearing of a petition on Thursday, the HC recorded in its order that since the time of the filing of the petition in 2012, the Union government had not filed its statement, and on Thursday, too, nobody was present on its behalf.

?The HC adjourned the matter for August 13, and directed the secretary, MHRD, to file a reply on behalf of the Central government clearing its stand on the issue.

As many as 36 members of the senate, highly acclaimed persons from their respective fields, are nominated to every senate by the Vice President of India, who is also the chancellor of the university.

The HC was hearing a petition filed by one RK Singla, who has contended that while nominating "ordinary fellows"in the senate, even those, who were defeated in the election, were nominated.
