The special convocation would coincide with Swaminathan's upcoming first Professor Shiv Ram Kashyap Memorial Oration at the PU campus.

This decision was taken at the PU syndicate meeting, which was presided vice-chancellor (V-C) Arun K Grover on Saturday. The meeting considered and approved many student-friendly decisions.

The syndicate, in November 2011, had decided to confer the degree of 'Doctor of Science (honoris causa)' on MS Swaminathan. He could not come to receive this honour at the PU convocation in December 2011. His name was recently recommended for the deliverance of the first Professor

Shiv Ram Kashyap Memorial Oration in the department of botany. Swaminathan conveyed his desire to receive the honoris causa degree during the forthcoming visit to the PU campus.

In his address, Grover informed the syndicate that the March 2014 issue of Careers360, a monthly magazine distributed by Outlook Publishing (India) Pvt Ltd, New Delhi, has placed PU at the seventh position in a list of top 70 outstanding public institutions in India.

Grover said, "In his death, we have lost a noted economist, academician and a pillar of support and source of inspiration to all of us." The syndicate also condoled the demise of Meenu, assistant professor of chemistry in the University Institute of Engineering & Technology (UIET), who passed away on February 23.
