Dr Raj Kumar, librarian at AC Joshi library, said that Summon: Web Scale Discovery Service by Proquest would be launched by Haryana governor Kaptan Singh Solanki during the inaugural function of the 60th Indian Library Association (ILA) international conference. The three-day conference is being organised in collaboration with United Nations Information Centre (UNIO), DRDO and ICSSR.

Kumar said that the summon service would help in increasing the service delivery of the PU library and provide an unprecedented research experience.

How is it better

According to Dr Neeraj Kumar, senior assistant librarian, earlier a student had to go to the links of individual journals. “For example, if one was searching articles on a specific topic, he had to go to Elsevier journal link and access them. Then he had to go to the link of Taylor and Francis or Wiley. But now, just like Google tool bar, he has to type keywords and all the concerned articles from all the e-journals and those available on public domain would appear,” he said. “So, earlier he used to go through various channels but now a single search box is available to him,” he added.

The bibliographic information about books, old journals and thesis could also be accessed through the new software.

Dr Raj Kumar said that the system would be a rich research experience that would present results without bias, increase resource usage, strengthen the library's role in the research process, and meet user expectations.
