Panjab University (PU) on Monday sent a proposal to the Chandigarh administration requesting a change in the date of the August 28 scheduled varsity student elections.

Confirming the development, dean students welfare Prof Navdeep Goyal said, "Few students' bodies objected to the earlier date as Raksha Bandhan is on the next day. The students' union felt that voters would skip the elections because of the festival as they would go home which would result in a low turnout. We have sent a proposal to hold the elections either on August 26 or 27."

Punjab University Student Union's (PUSU) press secretary Hardik Ahluwalia, said, "We do not want voting percentage to dip due to Raksha Bandhan on August 29. We would prefer if the elections were held on August 26."

National Students' Union of India's (NSUI) leader and outgoing president of Panjab University Students Council Divyanshu Budhiraja said, "We were also against holding the elections on August 28. It could cause a dip in the voting percentage. Last year too, the voting percentage was just 59%."
