The Punjab Congress has expressed concern over the rising crime against women and children, which belies the tall claims of the SAD-BJP government of a better law and order situation in the state.
In a statement issued here on Tuesday, Congress vice-presidents Tarlochan Singh Soond, OP Soni, Charanjit Singh Channi and Gurpreet Singh Kangar said the law and order in Punjab was at its worst during the SAD-BJP rule.
They said the rising number of cases of crime, especially against children, were of serious concern. They said the situation in Amritsar and Ludhiana cities was deteriorating fast. They held deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, who holds the home portfolio, responsible for the "poor" law and order.
According to the Punjab Congress, during 2012, 877 crime cases against children were registered. The 28 other states of India are better off than Punjab in crime against children. They said Ludhiana and Amritsar cities had reported 24% of the total crime cases against children registered in Punjab.
The Congress leaders said the poor law and order situation was also keeping investors away from Punjab. They said that the SAD-BJP government had failed to restore faith of people in the police. They said that misuse of police for political reasons had made the police defunct. They said that being a border state, the law and order must be the priority of the state government.
