Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal on Monday announced that the state will soon set up an organic farming board in Punjab. The CM said this while presiding over the valedictory function of three-day convention on organic farming.
"The promotion of organic farming in the state is the need of the hour and and the state government was committed to motivate the farmers for it," he said in his address, adding that it was obligatory on the part of national as well as regional organisations working for the cause to come forward to demonstrate the concept of organic farming on the farms at village level so as to woo the farmers.
He added that the farmers were now engaged in commercial farming at the larger risk of the health of human beings and the soil.
"A Punjabi farmer never hesitates to follow new practices of farming provided he was assured of profitability, marketability and sustainability of his produce," he added.
"The role of activists, scientists and progressive farmers committed to the cause of organic farming to prevail upon our farmers to shift from inorganic farming to organic one."
The CM told the gathering that the state government was taking initiatives to popularise organic farming through its nodal agency Punjab Agro. Till date nearly 1,000 farmers have been registered as certified organic farmers who were undertaking organic farming over 550 acres across the state.
Badal also announced the allotment of Panchayati land for setting up of organic farms in every block of the state to motivate farmers to take up organic farming.
