The rural voters in SAS Nagar outnumbered their urban counterparts on Sunday, as the turnout in a few villages touched the 80% mark while the figures in urban areas could hardly reach 60%.
The voters in the rural areas showed much enthusiasm as people started gathering at the polling booths well before 8am. Kumbra village recorded 80% turnout, followed by Shahi Majra where 78% people used their right to vote. Sohana stood third at 74%.
Interestingly, Shahi Majra ward also witnessed the highest number of women voters at 80%.
However, such rush was not witnessed at the polling booths in urban areas. In the first hour after the voting started, the polling percentage at urban booths was around 3, whereas it was 10% in rural areas.
Even after the polling concluded at 5pm, voters in large numbers were still queued up at the booths in rural areas, keeping polling staff busy throughout the day.
In the wards in posh areas, including Phase 3B2, 7, 9 and 10, the voting hardly touched the 60% mark. In other wards like 18, 19, 22, 22, 27, 28, which cover mostly the urban areas, had polling percentage between 58 and 60.

{{/usCountry}}Talking to HT, 89-year-old Gursharan Kaur, who was brought to the polling booth by her sons, said, “I cannot miss this opportunity as these leaders are the ones who are directly connected to us. I can’t make a mistake of not contributing in making the right choice for our area.”
Rural booths surge ahead
Despite having population lower than other wards, Shahi Majra recorded 78% voting.
Even the women of Shahi Majra remained ahead in terms of voting with their turnout figure touching the 80% mark.
84% male voters turned out in Kumbra village to exercise their right to vote.
Ward number 45 with maximum voters, at 3,686, recorded 57% voting.
