The Punjab government on Wednesday announced to seek Rs 2,000-crore World Bank aid for the sewerage system in 1,000 villages, for which it would send its plan soon to the union finance ministry.
The aid would also cover the proposal of augmenting rural drinking water supply in 800 villages to 70 litre per capita per day.
A decision to this effect was taken by chief minister Parkash Singh Badal at a high-level meeting in Patiala on Tuesday evening with the six-member World Bank delegation led by its task team leader Srinivasa Rao Podi Pi Reddy, a spokesman said here.
The chief minister also sought additional funds from the WB for upgrading damaged water supply schemes in waterlogged areas. The WB mission responded positively to the demand, the spokesman said.
The proposal for augmenting water supply included the installation of reverse osmosis (RO) plants in 250 vulnerable villages that would further be extended to complete the target of 1,000 villages.
The WB delegation was on a 10-day visit to Punjab to review the progress of the Rs 1,280 crore aided rural water supply and sanitation project. The mission visited all 116 villages covering 22 districts, the spokesman added.
