All children were students of KBDAV School, Sector 7, studying in Classes KG to 6. The incident took place when the autorickshaw ferrying nine children from Bapu Dham Colony was on its way to the school in Sector 7.

Vinod Aggarwal, a Sector-28 businessman, first rammed the Tata Aria car he was driving into the autorickshaw before knocking down a motorcyclist. The impact of the collision was such that the autorickshaw overturned.

The motorcyclist, Sukhwinder Singh from Nayagaon, suffered minor injuries. The incident comes barely a fortnight after a girl fell from an autorickshaw and died, following which the police initiated steps for the safety of schoolchildren. However, they have failed to curb the menace of overloaded autorickshaws.

The police said the injured students and the motorcyclist were rushed to the general hospital in Sector 16; there one of the girls was referred to the PGI.

The victims have been identified as Mohammad Akmal, 6; his sister Shipa, 8; Nandini, 9; Kushala, 8; Mohammad Haider, 6; and Samama, 9. Samama was later referred to the PGI.
