In view of making Punjab the first ever state to implement a state level project for solid management in the country, the state government has put the integrated municipal solid waste management project for Mohali and GMADA cluster consisting of 18 local bodies, on fast track.
An official spokesperson on Sunday said that GMADA cluster would include municipal corporations of SAS Nagar, Zirakpur, municipal councils of Banur, Dera Bassi, Rajpura and Ropar and it was estimated that 328 tonnes of solid waste would be generated in 18 urban local bodies falling in GMADA cluster per day.
He said as per estimated, 141 cities of Punjab produced nearly 5000 tones solid waste per day that would be utilised for producing power, compost or other useful products. He said once the programme becomes operational, all the urban areas would automatically be garbage free besides bringing a significant improvement in the overall environment of the state.
"Punjab is the first state that has initiated state level municipal solid waste management project to cover all 141 urban local bodies for developing an integrated municipal solid wastemanagement project on public private partnership", he said, adding that under this novel initiative, a most scientific system would be introduced in all the urban belts and town of the state.
He said under this system the whole state had been divided into eight mega clusters that included Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Bathinda, Ferozepur, Patiala, Amritsar, Pathankot and GMADA. Each cluster would cover 15 to 30 cities, he added.
