Employees of the Jammu and Kashmir State Road Transport Corporation on Friday observed a complete strike across the state in protest against the "forcible" shift of its headquarters from here to Srinagar.
Commuters were inconvenienced as buses, mini-buses and trucks of the corporation remained off roads, disrupting services on several inter-state routes.
SRTC employees, including drivers and conductors, held protest demonstrations here alleging the government had "forcefully" evicted them yesterday while shifting the corporation's head office from Tourist Reception Centre in Jammu to Nowgam in Srinagar.
They raised anti-government slogans and demanded restoration of the previous head office in Jammu.
"We condemn the use of police force by the government to forcibly remove officials and shift records and transport infrastructure, including buses and trucks, from our 60 year old SRTC headquarters in Jammu to Srinagar," a leader of J&K SRTC Union, Amrik Singh, told reporters here.
He claimed SRTC was told to shift to Nowgam area where "no infrastructure has been built and the land is purely meant for farming".
"How can we operate from there when there is no infrastructure at all?" he asked, adding that the government had acted like "goons" by evicting the employees.
