Sukhbir, 20 others fate to be decided on Monday

Fifteen companies of paramilitary have been deployed in the three assembly constituencies of Punjab, bypolls for which will be held on August 3 to seal the fate of 21 candidates, including ruling SAD President Sukhbir Singh Badal.

Fifteen companies of paramilitary have been deployed in the three assembly constituencies of Punjab, bypolls for which will be held on August 3 to seal the fate of 21 candidates, including ruling SAD President Sukhbir Singh Badal.

Sukhbir,who had to resign as Deputy Chief Minister last month as he failed to enter the state assembly within six months of his taking oath as deputy to his father Parkash Singh Badal in January this year, is seeking election from Jalalabad in Ferozepur district.

Five each companies of para forces have been deployed in addition to the police force which will help in smooth conduct of the bypolls campaigning for which ended this evening, official sources said here.

Besides Jalalabad the polls are being held in Banur and Kahnuwan.

The key contestants include Sukhbir and Hans Raj Joshan (Congress) at Jalalabad, Jasjit Singh Bunny (SAD)and Deepinder Singh Dhillon (Congress) at Banur (Patiala)and Sewa Singh Sekhwan (SAD) and Fateh Jund Singh Bajwa (Congress) at Kahnuwan (Gurdaspur)

Bypolls for Banur were necessiated after Kanwaljit Singh, the SAD MLA who represented it was killed in a road accident in March this year while the legislators of the two other constituencies Partap Singh Bajwa (Kahnuwan) and Sher Singh Ghubaiya (Jalalbad) were elected as Lok Sabha MPs from Gurdaspur and Ferozepur respectively.
