"Although I tried my best to strengthen the party somehow I feel, we have been unable to deliver or convert the strong anti-incumbency against the SAD-BJP government into votes. Therefore, I take full moral responsibility for the poor showing on the hustings and offer my resignation from the said post, so that you can reconstitute the state unit afresh. I am of the firm opinion that more meritorious and deserving person be given this responsibility," Khaira stated in his resignation letter to Rahul Gandhi.

Pointing out that he was appointed as the state party spokesman on April 8, 2013, Khaira stated that ever since his appointment, he had tried to work with sincerity and zeal to strengthen the party in Punjab.

Khaira re-assured Rahul Gandhi in his letter to his unflinching commitment towards the Congress.
