According to Punjab government spokesman, Saini has been handpicked by the coalition government to curb crime and check the menace of narcotics trade in the border state.

Sources revealed that the decision to appoint Saini as the new DGP was taken on Tuesday by the Punjab government. Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal had taken a vow at Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib to launch a concerted drive against drug peddling in the state and was of the view that Saini would be instrumental in this momentous task, said the spokesman.

The government has chosen Saini over Anil Kaushik, a 1975 batch IPS officer, DGP Jails Shashi Kant, a 1977 batch IPS officer, and DGP law and order Rajan Gupta, a 1979 batch IPS officer and DGP Home Guard GD Pandey, who is a 1981 batch IPS officer.
