Chandigarh administration informed the Punjab and Haryana high court on Monday that around 200 cases regarding defacement of property in the city by illegally pasting posters and making graffiti, including Panjab University and colleges, had been sent to the police stations concerned for taking action as per law.
The information was submitted during the resumed hearing of a case in which the court had taken suo motu notice of defacement of public property across the city.
However, the court headed by justice Rajesh Bindal granted three weeks’ time to the UT administration to submit the action taken report in the case.
The UT administration informed the court that the municipal corporation’s staff had been removing posters and banners from across the city.
Till date, Chandigarh police have registered around 40 first information reports (FIRS) against various persons, including varsity and college students, for defacement of property in the city.
Earlier, PU officials had recorded over 50 instances of defacement of campus property by students and had sent a communication, including photos of suspects, to the police. The varsity administration had found almost all groups including the National Students Union of India (NSUI), Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Student Organisation of India (SOI) and Student Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU) involved in the violations.
The court was also informed that initially the municipal corporation had sent around 200 cases with regard to defacement of property to the district magistrate who in turn forwarded those cases to the UT senior superintendent of police (SSP).

Counsel appearing for the Panjab University informed the court that varsity authorities were taking every step to ensure that students did not indulge in defacement of properties by pasting of posters at places other than the designated sites and the varsity had also forwarded the concerned cases to the UT administration for action.
