Telephone facility for inmates launched

Director general of police (prisons) Yash Pal Singhal on Wednesday inaugurated ‘prison inmate calling system’ at Ambala Central Jail. Now, the prisoners would be allowed to telephone to their relatives twice a week.

Singhal said that the facility would be extended to all the 19 jails across the state by the first week of June.

He said the prisoners would be allowed to talk to their relatives at the telephone numbers in the jail records, adding that the charges for a local call would be ` 1 per minute and the STD ` 1.25 per minute.

The DGP said that the inmates would be required to deposit the amount in advance and the balance would be shown on the screen after every use, adding that the move was likely to ease the rush at the jails during meeting hours.
