She takes two hours to appear for the shutterbugs and interviewers waiting to talk to Tara Sharma Singla about her exhibition of paintings that is titled Color Stanza. She returns with a polite apology, saying she was playing the perfect hostess to the governor of Punjab and administrator of Chandigarh, Shivraj Patil. “It was pure luck to have him here. I wanted an expert opinion from him; he is such a learned man,” she adds.
A graduate from the Chandigarh College of Architecture, Tara is currently working as an architect with the department of architecture, Haryana. Color Stanza is her second exhibition in the city, she tells us, which she has put up after six-and-a-half years. “My first exhibition, titled Eclipsed: The Brilliance of Black, was held in August 2007. Then I got married, went to London and worked with the New City Gallery as an artist in 2008. Later, we returned to India since my mother-in-law was diagnosed with cancer. From dealing with her death to taking care of my three-year-old son, a lot has changed in these years, hence the gap in putting up my second exhibition,” Tara explains.
Color Stanza is a collection of 31 artworks that include some experimentation with colour. “Black has always been my favourite colour. People usually consider it to represent mourning, but for me, it’s one of the boldest colours and challenging to experiment with. After using so many colours this time, I believe that my rainbow has nine colours,” she says.
Previously, Tara had also displayed a collection of black and white sketches in London, which she says were an insight into her life there. About Color Stanza, she adds, “In these paintings, I have used intricate sketching along with using bold strokes. The pieces are a glimpse into my travels and experiences of meeting people during the last six and a half years.”
