This was the topic for the recently held debate at the ongoing inter-college youth festival at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana. Not just speakers, but many from the audience strongly responded by speaking for and against the motion.

Post session, HT spoke to participants and the audience alike, who shared their views with us and painted an interesting canvas on the topic.

Talking about the benefits of social media, one of the students mentioned, “Latest phones and many other gadgets keep us busy in many ways. One of them is by enabling us to keep in touch with all our friends and relatives. This has only brightened up my life.”Stressing on the need of social networking sites, Ravneet and Priya Bahri, said, “In our present fast paced lives, it is not possible to meet everyone face to face. However, through Facebook, Twitter or WhatsApp, one can get in touch with anyone anytime and above all one can find and get connected with childhood friends. Considering marketing and business purposes, it is the easiest tool to promote different products and services,” say the two.

Sharing similar views, Raja feels that as we all are deeply engrossed in the social network, it has hampered personal bonds.“With every advancing day, warmth and real connections are sinking,” he says.
Gurleen Kaur agrees and says, “According to my research on the Internet, 56% of the people on social media are addicted to Facebook. They might not be connected to loved ones in the real world. And, when it comes to mobiles, they are more important than anything else. However, to get rid from the shackles of slavery resulting from modern means, we need to wake up,” says Kaur.
