Sector 17 may again reverberate with live music on Saturdays if a new proposal of the Chandigarh municipal corporation takes shape.
To arrest the sector's “declining popularity”, Chandigarh municipal corporation (MC) is planning to restart its weekly Plaza carnival, which was stopped in 2010 and used to act as a platform for local artistes to showcase their talent.
The proposal for restarting the carnival, which used to be organised every Saturday, will come up in the meeting of the MC's finance and contract committee on Friday.
Area councillor Pardeep Chhabra confirmed this: “We want to revive it as Sector 17 is losing its sheen to shopping malls that have come up in the city in the recent past.”
The carnival was stopped in 2010 after the contractor who was allotted the carnival backed out due to losses. The carnival was under CITCO till 2002, but was later transferred to the MC and gained popularity.
However, restarting the carnival is not the only way MC plans to give Sector 17 a fighting chance against shopping malls. “We are planning to rope in private companies for beautifying the sector's shopping area,” Chhabra said. “Also, a four-acre open space will be developed near the post office in Sector 17.”
