'Training students as per tourism industry's need of hour'

Hospitality and tourism industry in India has enormous employment avenues and the need of the hour is to train students as per the needs of the industry. This was the gist of the viewpoints expressed by experts a seminar "Shaping youth for hospitality and tourism industry", organised by the Institute of Hotel & Tourism Management (IHTM) of Maharshi Dayanand University here on Haryana Tourism Day on Saturday.

RN Pandey, additional director general, ministry of tourism, government of India, highlighted the tourism potential in India. He said that the government of India was taking ample measures to promote the tourism sector. He said that academic institutions must focus on skill development of student for employment in hospitality and tourism sector.

Vinnie Jauhari, director, IIMT, Oxford Brookes University, Gurgaon, said that conceptual, creative, leadership, interpersonal, administrative, technical, communication skill as well as critical thinking process must be honed by the students for success in this industry. She said that commitment to work, willingness to learn, and passion towards the profession were essential to achieve success.

Prof Mohender Chand of Kurukshetra University talked about providing value-based services in this sector. Prof RK Bhandari, principal, BCIHMT (New Delhi) advocated knowledge transfer from industry to academics as well as providing motivational and behavioural training to career aspirants of this sector.
