In what has set alarm bells ringing for security forces ahead of Independence Day celebrations on Friday, the Kishtwar Police have detained two brothers of former Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) district commander, Habib Gujjar, at the Chowgan ground, 2km from the Kishtwar bus stand.

Jamal Din and Abdul Karim — Jamal was clad in a burka — were held a few metre from the spot where the Indian flag is to be hoisted on
August 15.

Kishtwar additional superintendent of police Abdul Qayoom told reporters, “Two suspects — Jamal Din and Abdul Karim — have been detained from the Chowgan ground, after their movement aroused suspicion. Jamal Din, a resident of Keshwan, Kishtwar, was dressed in a burka. A large quantity of food, medicines and a number of mobile sets has been recovered from their possession.”

One of the detained individuals, Jamal, is already facing a murder case registered against him in 2010 and a challan in court was presented earlier this month.
“Jamal also faces previous cases related to militancy and would have been detained earlier, as a matter of policy. However, he had been missing and seemed to have given us the slip. On Wednesday, his suspicious movements led us to detain him.”
