The farmer was rushed to a Bhuna hospital, but later shifted to a private hospital where his condition was said to be "critical". He had not regained consciousness by Saturday afternoon.

The farmer owns 26 acres of fertile land that was scheduled to be acquired for the upcoming nuclear plant, it was learnt.

Kishan Sangharsh Samiti leader Hans Raj Siwach said that the elderly farmer was worried over his land's "seizure by the government" for the plant and had thus consumed poison.

Rajesh, a son of the victim, also maintained that his father was upset over the land acquisition, and had been a regular at 'dharna' sites for the last about two years under the banner of Kishan Sangharsh Samiti.
