The UT administration has directed the municipal corporation not to install any more fountains in city without the approval of chief architect, to implement malba by-laws and frame a policy to lay paver blocks in city.
The decision was taken in the meeting of the UT coordination committee held on Tuesday.
The civic body was spending lakhs of rupees on these fountains across the city but was not putting any thought in the architectural design.
Fountains were being constructed purely on the basis of the demand of area councillors. In most cases, it was the area councillor who conceptualised the water feature and all that the MC did was to work out the economics and begin work without taking the guidance of any architect. At present 36 fountains have been installed across the city.
The administration has also asked the civic body to implement malba by-laws in city and start fining violators an amount of Rs 1,500 on the spot.
MC House last approved the by-laws in 2010 but no such laws have been implemented.It has also directed, MC to frame a policy for laying the paver blocks in city and told the authorities not encourage the same as the residents are complaining saying that, where concrete footpaths had been laid, no space had been left around the trees for proper nourishment of the roots. Freshly-planted trees were not getting sufficient space to grow due to the concrete surroundings.
