UT admn releases greening city action plan

The UT administration released the Greening Chandigarh action plan 2014-15 during the World Environment Day - 2014 celebrations organised by the department of forests and environment and youth innovative society at Sukhna Lake here on Thursday.

The UT administration released the Greening Chandigarh action plan 2014-15 during the World Environment Day - 2014 celebrations organised by the department of forests and environment and youth innovative society at Sukhna Lake here on Thursday.

Greening Chandigarh action plan is a guiding tool for the greening agencies of the administration to fulfill their commitment of making the city clean and green.

It was revealed during the celebrations that against the target of 2, 05,000 saplings, 2, 22,103 saplings were planted last year, while this year, a target of 2, 08,477 saplings had been set.

The forest department will carry out plantation of 55,000 saplings, the horticulture wing of the municipal corporation will plant 58,000 saplings, while the horticulture wing of the engineering department will plant 30,477 saplings.

Apart from this, around 65,000 saplings will be planted by schools, colleges, resident welfare associations, market associations, NGOs, rotary clubs, lion's club and other government organisations.

During the celebrations, an environment awareness cycle rally was flagged off from Sukhna Lake by chief guest KK Sharma, Union Territory (UT) adviser.

On this occasion, the Best Eco Club Award of UT was announced by the environment department and prizes for their commendable work in the field of environment conservation were distributed by the chief guest.
