Defying all dictates of her family a 16-year-old stands firmly by her “lover” and denied having accused him of a raping her.
The development comes as an embarrassment to the UT police, which had booked the 20-year-old youth, Karan, who worked as a helper at a shop, on the charge of rape. In fact, the girl accused her grandmother of trying to marry her off to an aged man thus forcing her to take the extreme step.
Testifying before the court of additional district and sessions judge Shalini S Nagpal on Tuesday, the victim denied that she was raped and had claimed that she had eloped with the accused on her own “sweet will”.
“My grandmother wanted to marry me to an aged person and to avoid marrying someone who is older to me I eloped with Karan whom I loved,” the 16-year-old girl told the court.
The girl said that she had married the accused and expressed her will to stay with him rather than her grandmother.
UT Police on December 14, 2012, had booked Karan on the complaint of the girl's grandmother, a Bapu Dham colony resident.
The complainant had alleged that her 15-year-old granddaughter had gone missing, following which a report was lodged at the Sector 26 police station. Later, it came to light that Karan, who also resides in the colony, eloped with the girl on pretext of marrying her.
The police arrested the accused, his parents and rescued the girl, who had refused to go back to her grandmother. The court on April 23 had framed charges of rape against Karan, while his parents were discharged in the case.
