Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee chief Virbhadra Singh on Monday hit out at his onetime friend-turned detractor former state Congress chief Kaul Singh Thakur for his public outburst against him.

Singh, who presided over a function to mark the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, made a veiled attack on Kaul Singh.

"Such statement does not help anybody, including himself (Kaul Singh). I do not know who advised him to do so and who are his well-wishers," said Singh, commenting on Kaul Singh's recent statement in which he accused Virbhadra of breaching the party's discipline.

Hinting that he was very much in the race for the chief minister's post, Kaul Singh had said that issue would be decided by the party high command.

In his informal talk with mediapersons here at the Congress office, Virbhadra Singh said, "I don't want to comment on any statement of Kaul Singh. But simultaneously he wielded a stick of discipline against those defying party lines.

"The statements of two prime witnesses, Kapil Mohan and PC Jain, in the graft case have vindicated my stand that the cases are fabricated against me. In their statements registered before the court of justice, both have refuted any allegations against me, which also proves how corrupt the state government is," he said.

"It was a vindictive act by the corrupt chief minister of the ever-corrupt government in the state," he added.

He said, "The area from where I have contested for the first time has been ignored always. With the love and affection of the people, I will win. I have drafted a map for development in the area and the road connectivity will be on the priority list. Drip irrigation schemes, dairy farming and various other schemes will also be introduced in the area so that the people could get the benefits."

Before taking part in the birth anniversary celebrations of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Singh said, "The Congress party will register a thumping victory in the assembly elections and form the government in state."

He said, "Our victory will also bring responsibility to the party workers as the corruption is deep-rooted in the state and common man has been ignored by the state government. Party workers have to work hard to provide justice to people."

The Congress party is 126 years old and it has a history of working the poor and common man, and the tradition will continue, he added.
