“After my daughter got admission in the college, we inquired about the list of things we needed to bring. We were left astonished when besides a table and chair, the warden also asked us to get a bed,” said a parent, whose daughter got admission in the college this year.

He said they were told by the warden that it was the students’ responsibility to bring beds.

The practice was confirmed by college officials. When contacted, Archna Jaiswal, warden of the girls’ hostel at the Amritsar medical college, said two of the three hostels didn’t provide furniture.

“These hostels were built around 10 years ago. Since then, students have been bringing their own furniture,” she said.

The hostel which does offer furniture to occupants is an old one and it is allocated to the senior students only. New students either girls or boys, they have to get their own furniture.
