Panjab University campus would be able to offer wi-fi facility to the students, faculty and officials from the coming academic session since the first phase of the project has been completed and trials are currently on.
This wi-fi Internet facility would be available free of cost for the students, though social networking websites and YouTube would be blocked.
Varsity authorities claimed to have spent around Rs 3.30 crore till date on the first phase of the project that would cost around Rs 15 crore. The vice chancellor's office and the area around it has also been made wi-fi enabled in the first phase.
The stretch from the department of geology to the PU guest house is already wi-fi enabled while process is on to do the same in the pharmaceutical sciences department grid. Outdoor access points would also be provided under the wi-fi facility.
Dr K Tankeshwar, director of PU computer centre, said “We want to provide better facilities to university students and making the campus wi-fi enabled is just one of them. If students need to access certain websites for academic purposes, they can seek permission and use the same.”
Students would be able to connect to the wi-fi network through user names and passwords allocated to them. Since the Internet connectivity has been provided to the university through the National Knowledge Network of government of India, students would be able to use the facility only for academic purposes.

In the next phases, the varsity would make its entire Sector 25 campus and hostels and even faculty houses as wi-fi enabled.
