A massive cleanliness drive was launched at Solang nullah, 13 km from here, on Thursday.
The drive was launched by the Mahila Mandal activists from Solang, Kothi, Ruwar, Palchan and Burwa under the supervision of local sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Viney Dhiman and district tourism development officer Ashwani Kumar.
A huge quantity of garbage, including plastic bottles, biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste, was collected by the volunteers of Mahila Mandals from villages of upper Kullu valley.
The women folk showed keen interest and ensured their active participation in making the Solang area litter free.
Dhiman said it was the fourth phase of the clean-up drive, which is known as Clean Manali, Green Manali. While addressing the members of Mahila Mandals , Dhiman said it was not only the duty of local villagers to maintain and preserve the sanctity of holy shrines of Solang valley but it was their responsibility to conserve and preserve the environment and ecology of this Himalayan region.
He said shopkeepers at Solang nullah would be registered and photo identity cards would be issued to them so that in case of complaints, action could be easily initiated against them.
