Chief judicial magistrate-cum-secretary , District Legal Services Authority, Rupnagar Gopal Arora said women should exercise the right to free legal aid.

He said under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code, a woman who had been raped can record her statement before the magistrate when the case was under trial, and noone requires to be present.

A rape victim could also record her statement with only one police officer and a woman constable in a convenient place.

He added that it is important for the victim to feel comfortable and be free of stress while narrating the incident.

Arora said the identity of a rape victim should be kept secret. "Neither police nor media can publish the name of the victim,"he said.

"It is the duty of every employer to create a sexual harassment complaints committee within the organisation for redressal of such complaint,"Arora said.

District Bar Association Rupnagar secretary H S Sitta and advocate Jaswant Saini were also present on the occasion.
