The inmates of Model Burail jail along with the State Health Society, Revised National TB Control Programme (RNTCP) Chandigarh and Chandigarh State AIDS Control Society (CSACS) observed World Tuberculosis Day on Saturday.
Balbir Singh Dhol, additional inspector general, Model Jail, inaugurated the event.
Dr Anil Garg, state TB officer, Chandigarh, said the health administration had established 17 designated microscopy centres and more than 100 DOT centres where diagnosis and full treatment of TB was available free of cost. He said anti TB medicines were also available in the jail for the inmates who were suffering from TB.
He said most of the colonies and periphery of Chandigarh have been covered under the Revised National TB Control Progrmame and village level implementation and monitoring committees have been established to create awareness, guide people and provide full term treatment at DOT Centres. City beautiful would be free from the menace of TB very soon, he added.
Dr Kavita Chavan, deputy director, State AIDS Control Society, apprised prisoners about mode of spread of HIV and its prevention.
