5 die after luxury bus falls into 60-foot gorge off old Pune-Mumbai highway

The accident happened around 5 am when the driver lost control over the vehicle near Garmal point turn in Raigarh district . The injured has been rushed to the nearby hospitals, police said.

At least five passengers were killed and several injured in an early morning accident when a luxury bus skidded off and fell into a 60 feet gorge near Borghat on the old Pune-Mumbai highway.

The accident happened around 5 am when the driver lost control over the vehicle near Garmal point turn in Raigarh district . The injured has been rushed to the nearby hospitals, police said.

Around 11 ambulances were dispatched for Garmal point near Borghat soon after the accident. Police are verifying if the driver dozed off at the wheel or the accident took place due to overspeeding.

The Khopoli police are in the process of registering a case of causing death due to negligence after which statements of those injured will be recorded for the sequence of events.

A three-year-old child was among those killed on the spot, police said. A Devdoot rescue team of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC), and personnel from highway police, Khopoli police and members of the public pitched in to assist in the rescue operations.
