Woman killed, four injured as BMTC electric bus rams into canteen in Peenya

This follows a previous incident in March where two were killed in a similar crash.

A woman lost her life and four others sustained injuries after an electric bus operated by the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) crashed into a roadside canteen in the Peenya Industrial Area on Friday morning, news agency PTI reported.

This is not the first time a BMTC-operated electric bus has been involved in a serious accident.

According to the report, the incident took place around 8:45 am while the bus was on its route from Majestic to Peenya. According to BMTC officials, the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle, veering off the road and hitting the canteen where several pedestrians were nearby.

One woman, who was standing close to the canteen at the time, suffered serious injuries and was rushed to Lakshmi Hospital. Despite medical attention, she succumbed to her injuries.

Police from the Peenya Traffic Station and BMTC officials inspected the accident site shortly after the incident. A case has been registered and an investigation is underway.

In an official statement, BMTC said, “The safety of passengers and the public is the first priority of the organisation. All necessary arrangements are being made for the treatment of the injured. We express our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and pray for strength during this difficult time.”

This is not the first time a BMTC-operated electric bus has been involved in a serious accident. In a similar incident in March, two people were killed when an electric bus crashed into a two-wheeler on Old Airport Road in eastern Bengaluru.

According to a Deccan Herald report, the accident occurred around 10 pm near the ISRO UR Rao Satellite Centre. The victims were identified as a Rapido driver and his pillion rider.
