Burglary at Shashi Tharoor’s official residence in Delhi, six idols stolen

Police suspect that buglers climbed the boundary wall of Tharoor’s residence and stole antique piece, copper spectacles and six idols.

A theft took place at the official bungalow of Congress MP Shashi Tharoor in Delhi and six idols, an antique piece and copper spectacles were stolen from the premises.

The MP told the police that the break-in took place on the night of November 29. One of the employees inside the Parliamentarian’s Lodhi Road residence saw the locks of Tharoor’s office broken the following morning.

Police suspect the burglars may have climbed the boundary wall of his bungalow because the house is located on the main road. Investigating officers suspect the role of vagabonds often spotted in the area.

“ It is a common problem here. There are many vagabonds here because they get food and clothes from devotees in the nearby Sai Temple of Lodhi Colony. A few weeks ago, a signage was reported stolen near the former minister’s house,” said an investigating officer.

Among the items reported stolen from his office were an antique idol and copper spectacles. Six idols from a temple within his compound were also reported missing.

DCP New Delhi Jatin Narwal told HT that police have leads and suspect the role of a gang that has been involved in similar idol thefts before.

Police have registered a case at the Tughlaq Road police station and launched an investigation.

Senior police officers said police control room vans in the New Delhi area have been ordered to increase patrolling on the roads at night and keep an eye on vagabonds, who often break into the houses of MPs and bureaucrats there.
