The two kidneys were transplanted to matching receipts while her corneas on transplantation restored the eyesight of two blind people. The 11-year-old girl, Nayna Thakur from Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, was the victim of a road accident on March 3. The massive impact of the accident led to grievous head injury, which ultimately proved fatal as the doctors at PGIMER declared her brain dead.

PGI director Dr Surjit Singh said, “The exemplary and altruistic decision by the brave family of Nayna Thakur in the face of their “tragic and unbearable loss” has proved a boon for four patients.”

Dr Vipin Koushal, medical superintendent-cum-head, department of hospital administration, PGIMER, and nodal officer, ROTTO (North), said, “The issue of organ donation was flagged to the family by the transplant coordinators at PGIMER. Following their consent, the kidneys of the donor were retrieved and transplanted to two patients suffering from terminal renal ailments who were on dialysis for long, thereby giving them a fresh lease of life. The retrieved corneas of the donor restored the sight of two corneal blind patients.”

“It was a tough call to say ‘yes’ to organ donation. But, the only thought that enabled us to go ahead with this decision was that Nayna was so kind hearted and giving. This might give solace to her departed soul,” said Manoj Kumar, Nayna’s father.
