141 proclaimed offenders in drug cases nabbed in a month in Punjab
Giving weekly updates on drugs, IG headquarters Sukhchain Singh Gill said that Punjab Police have arrested 472 drug smugglers/suppliers after registering 354 first information reports (FIRs), including 36 commercial, under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act across the state in the last one week.
Punjab Police has successfully managed to arrest as many as 141 proclaimed offenders (POs)/absconders in drug cases over the last one month.
Disclosing this here at a press conference, IG headquarters Sukhchain Singh Gill, said drug suppliers have started roping in women to smuggle the contraband in the hope that cops won’t suspect them.
“It has also come to the fore that drug peddlers these days prefer public transport systems for smuggling, due to which a strong human intelligence network is required for tracking,” he added.

Police have also recovered 5.53kg heroin, 21.9kg opium, 21.5kg ganja, six quintals of poppy husk and 1.46 lakh tablets/capsules/injections/vials of pharma opioids besides recovering ₹23.37 lakh drug money after carrying out cordon and search operations in drug-affected areas beside laying nakas at vulnerable routes across the state, he said.
The IG said besides tightening the noose around drug smugglers, the Punjab Police has also been making all possible efforts to keep youth away from drugs besides helping to rehabilitate those who have already fallen prey to this menace.
He said that as part of the ongoing campaign against drugs, the Barnala Police has organised a four-day basketball league under-17 (boys) to motivate youth towards sports and maintain their physical and mental health.
