Two teenage boys drowned in the Rajasthan Canal flowing through Sirsa district on Thursday afternoon, police said on Friday.

The missing boys, aged 17 and 14, are residents of Bani village in Sirsa district. According to family members and police officials, they had gone to take a bath in the canal on Thursday afternoon along with a group of other boys from the village.

According to the police, the group had gathered near the Indira Gandhi Canal bridge connecting Haryana’s Bani village with Surewala village in Rajasthan. When they were bathing, the two boys reportedly moved into deeper waters and were caught in the strong current of the canal.

The other boys returned home in the evening and informed the family members. They informed the police and the search operation was launched with the help of divers. The search teams continued combing the canal stretch till late Thursday evening, and resumed again on Friday morning. Officials privy to the matter said the divers searching for the boys have now entered Rajasthan territory while tracing the canal flow.
