Police on Saturday foiled attempts of Awami Ittehad Party(AIP) sit-in against the recent amendments in MGNREGA.

Several party leaders were placed under house arrest, including the party’s lone assembly member, Sheikh Khursheed. The AIP termed the move as “undemocratic and an assault on the constitutional right to peaceful protest”.
Chief spokesperson Inam Un Nabi condemned the administration for not allowing a peaceful sit-in against the recent amendments in MGNREGA, terming the move as “undemocratic and an assault on the constitutional right to peaceful protest”. “The house arrest of senior AIP leaders, including MLA Langate Sheikh Khursheed, party spokesperson Peerzada Firdouse Baba and DDC member Muzaffar Dar besides other leaders is a deliberate attempt to silence voices raising genuine public concerns,” he said.
“Raising issues related to employment, wages and job security under MGNREGA is not a crime. Suppressing peaceful dissent only deepens public distrust,” he said.
The AIP chief spokesperson appealed to the administration to act responsibly and allow the proposed peaceful protest scheduled for Monday at Baramulla.
