Chandigarh: Man who robbed elderly woman 18 years ago finally nabbed
The accused has been identified as Shiv Kumar, hailing from Unnao in Uttar Pradesh. He had been on the run since 2008 after the robbery. Complainant Balwant Singh of Sector-43, Chandigarh, had told the police that he, along with his 80-year-old mother, were at home when two youth turned up there and told them that their maid has met with an accident and was waiting for help in the Sector-44 market.
Almost 18 years after he robbed an 80-year-old, an Uttar Pradesh native landed in the Proclaimed Offender (PO) and Summon Staff net. He is among the eight POs arrested in the last 24 hours.
The accused has been identified as Shiv Kumar, hailing from Unnao in Uttar Pradesh. He had been on the run since 2008 after the robbery. Complainant Balwant Singh of Sector-43, Chandigarh, had told the police that he, along with his 80-year-old mother, were at home when two youth turned up there and told them that their maid has met with an accident and was waiting for help in the Sector-44 market.
Balwant agreed to go with the youths, but they told him to reach the market on foot as they had a scooter which, they claimed, was parked at some distance.
When Balwant returned after home, he found that the accused persons had robbed his 80-year-old mother of three gold bangles, a one gold chain, a mobile phone and ₹10,000.
A case under Sections 356 (assault), 392 (robbery), 454 (house trespass), 417 (cheating) and 341 (wrongful restraint) of the Indian Penal Code was registered at the Sector-36 police station.
The accused had fled after the crime and were never arrested in the case. The court had declared them PO on August 30, 2012.
The PO cell staff got a tip-off that the accused was at his native place and conducted a raid.
Man wanted for attacking police team arrested
Another PO, who was wanted for manhandling cops, was also arrested from Uttar Pradesh. Chandigarh police constable Umesh Kumar, who was posted with the PCR, wing had complained that on June 10, 2016, when he, along with his colleague were on patrolling duty, they spotted some youths creating nuisance near the jungle area, Sector-53.
When they stopped their motorcycle near the youth, one of them rammed his motorcycle into theirs. The cops lost balance and fell. Before they could get back on their feet, the youths started manhandling them and rained slaps and punches on them. The accused had even tore their uniform. The youths were booked under Sections 279 (rash driving), 147 (rioting), 149 (unlawful assembly), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt), 353 (criminal force to deter public servant from duty) of IPC on June 10, 2016 and declared as PO on February 15, 2022.
PO in accident case arrested
The PO and Summon Staff also arrested an Abhaypur village resident wanted in an accident case. He was identified as Aditiya Kumar. He was accused of running over a biker on the night of October 13, 2018. He was booked for rash driving and death due to negligence and later granted bail. But after getting bail, he stopped appearing for the court proceedings and was declared PO on August 31, 2022.
5 absconders in cheque bounce cases arrested
Five persons, identified as Vijay Pal from Ambala, Gurpreet Kaur from Patiala, Parmod Kumar Mishra of Zirakpur, Govind Kushwaha of Sector-40, Chandigarh, and Raj Bahadur of Mauli Jagran who were declared proclaimed offenders in separate check-bounce cases were also arrested. All the accused were produced before the court and released on bail.
