Drunk youth attacks cop with flower pot in Chandigarh, arrested

A 21-year-old youth is facing attempt to murder charges after attacking a police personnel with a flower pot at the Sector 8 market on Tuesday night.

The victim, Varinder Singh, 45, a head constable with the Chandigarh Police, had stopped the accused, Abhishek Kumar, for engaging in hooliganism in an inebriated state in the market.

A native of Uttar Pradesh (UP), Kumar is currently residing in Sector 29, where he works as a labourer, said police.

The head constable, who is posted at the Sector 8 beat box, was taken to GMSH, Sector 16, where he received 17 stitches on the head.

“The accused was in an inebriated state, as confirmed by his medical examination at GMSH, Sector 16. He has been arrested,” said Jai Parkash, station house officer, Sector 3 police station.

Abhishek was booked under Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from duty) and 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) of the Indian Penal Code at the Sector 3 police station.
