Accusing the BJP-led Central and Haryana governments of adopting new tactics to cheat farmers, former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Tuesday said the weights of urea bags have been reduced but the cost remains the same.
In a statement, the Congress leader said that a urea bag used to weigh 50 kg. “It was reduced to 45 kg, and now it’s just 40 kg. The new bag contained 37% nitrogen and 17% sulphur. The price remained the same at ₹254 per bag. This means the farmers are getting less quantity of urea,” the leader of the opposition said.
He added that the BJP’s anti farmer intentions were visible in the 2026-27 Union Budget. “This was perhaps the first budget in the nation’s history which did not even make a mention of farmers,” Hooda said.
“The policies of the BJP government are weakening farmers financially. They are being fleeced in the name of crop insurance. They struggle with rising farm input costs and natural calamities. On top of that, the reduction in the weight of urea bags has only compounded their woes,” the Congress leader said.
