Akal Takht jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj again reiterated that Punjabi Lane is the ancestral homeland of the Sikh community in Shillong and will continue to remain so.
On his two-day visit to Meghalaya, the jathedar on Tuesday met members of the Sikh community residing in Shillong and paid obeisance at Gurdwara Guru Nanak Darbar located there. He also visited the Guru Nanak School, being run by the gurdwara management committee.
The jathedar listened to their concerns and reviewed the prevailing situation in the area. “Sikhs living in Punjabi Lane remain deeply connected with Sikh values and the gurdwara. Sikhs have been residing on the land for centuries, and Punjabi Lane is the oldest area of their settlement here. The community has earned recognition through their hard work and intelligence, while also making significant contributions to the development of Meghalaya and to social service,” he said. Gurjeet Singh, president of the Gurdwara Guru Nanak Darbar Management Committee, was also present.
