Khelo India centre to be opened in Mahendergarh

An official spokesperson said that centres being planned to be set up are related to taekwondo, wushu, karate, jiu-jitsu, kurash, rowing, kayaking and canoeing, sailing, shooting, cycling, gymnastics, sepak takraw, equestrian (horse riding), squash and golf.

The Sports Authority of India (SAI) has approved 139 additional Khelo India centres across the country out of which centres for 15 different sports disciplines will also be established in Mahendergarh district.

An official spokesperson said that centres being planned to be set up are related to taekwondo, wushu, karate, jiu-jitsu, kurash, rowing, kayaking and canoeing, sailing, shooting, cycling, gymnastics, sepak takraw, equestrian (horse riding), squash and golf.

The spokesperson said that priority for establishing these centres will be given to institutions that have adequate playgrounds and modern training infrastructure for sports. Institutions providing boarding facilities for players and having an excellent track record in sports development and athlete performance will also be preferred.

A key objective of this government scheme is also to provide employment and coaching opportunities to former champion athletes, the spokesperson said.
