Nineteen days after 10 lakh was stolen from the house of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Harkesh Mittal on Mall Road, police arrested his domestic help on Monday.

The arrested accused has been identified as Raj Kumar of Samastipur, Bihar, who had been working at Mittal’s house for 17 years. Police also arrested Raj’s brother Ajay Kumar, who allegedly assisted Raj in committing the theft.

Additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP, city 3) Shubham Mittal said the BJP leader in his statement stated that on July 7, his son Vishu found that 10 lakh had been stolen from the cupboard and the DVR of the CCTV cameras were missing. Mittal added that the accused had used a duplicate key to open the locks.

The ADCP added that on July 20, Harkesh recorded a supplementary statement and alleged that Raj had stolen the money. He found out about it when he heard him talking about the money to his mother and brother over the phone.

“During questioning, Raj confessed that he had stolen cash from the almirah using a duplicate key. He then handed over the cash and DVR to his brother. The accused continued working at the house to avoid suspicion,” said the ADCP. A hunt is on for the arrest of his brother.
