Ludhiana: Man booked for confining protected parakeet at home

The Sahnewal police have booked a man for allegedly keeping a rose-ringed parakeet, a protected species under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, in captivity at his residence in Lohara village.

The accused has been identified as Pappu Kumar, a resident of New Satguru Nagar, Lohara. The case was registered on the complaint of Narinder Sharma, Forest Range Officer (Wildlife).

According to the complaint, wildlife officials received information that the accused had caged a Rose-ringed Parakeet at his home.

The officer stated that keeping native parrots in captivity is prohibited under the Wildlife (Protection) Act and constitutes a punishable offence.

Investigating officer ASI Roshan Lal said an FIR has been registered against the accused under Sections 2, 39, 50 and 51 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. Further investigation is underway.

A chick that had fallen from its nest was rehabilitated and released into the wild at Tiger Safari, Ludhiana, through the joint efforts of animal lovers, People For Animals (PFA) Ludhiana and the Wildlife Department. The chick was rescued nearly two months ago.
